Artist Statement
Throughout my portfolio, I wanted to portray the passing down of traditions visually through my vibrant New Orleans-style piece. Some underlying questions I investigated through my pieces were: “How does my family’s 'recipe' of their traditions, place, and people look through the lens of New Orleans’ vibrant identity?” and “What objects represent New Orleans tradition, culture, and environment?” Through the discovery of old family photographs, pictures sent from family friends, and even through pictures I’ve seen online, I have been able to curate how I view New Orleans through my artwork. Experimenting with colorful mediums, such as watercolor, gouache, gemstones, and collage elements, has allowed me to push past my artistic limits in order to achieve the vibrant and joyful elements of New Orleans in my works. Beyond the accent colors and 3D elements, my experimentation with creating textures with a pencil has also been beneficial in curating my sustained investigation. Overall, New Orleans has always been such an important place in my life. Growing up going to Mardi Gras, visiting my relatives, and experiencing New Orleans' unique culture has shaped me into the person I am today.
